Govt asks stranded Indian to leave as humanitarian corridor for evacuation announced

Photo : APNew Delhi: The Indian embassy in Ukraine on Tuesday said that the humanitarian corridor for evacuation of stranded people has been announced in various parts of the war-torn country and urged Indian nationals to evacuate using trains or any other means of transport. In a statement, the Indian embassy said that establishment of the next humanitarian corridor is not certain, given the prevailing situation in the country. “The Humanitarian Corridor for evacuation of stranded people has been announced in various parts of Ukraine from 1000 hrs on 8 March 2022. Considering the security situation, establishment of the next humanitarian corridor is uncertain,” the embassy said. “All stranded Indian nationals are urged to make use of this opportunity and evacuate using trains/vehicles or any other available means of transport giving due consideration to safety,” it added.On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin during which he conveyed to him the importance of the safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Ukraine’s Sumy at the earliest.The Prime Minister also welcomed the announcement of ceasefire and establishment of humanitarian corridors in parts of Ukraine, including in Sumy, which is witnessing intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops.Russian authorities started a ceasefire on Monday and opened “humanitarian corridors” in key Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv and Sumy.So far, about 18,000 Indians have been brought back from the war-hit country through special flights under Operation Ganga which began on February 22, the government said.
