India reported 1,59,632 new infections, the highest in 224 days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on January 9, reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the country with particular focus on preparedness as infections were fuelled by Omicron variant rise, says the Prime Minister’s Office.During the review meeting Mr. Modi called for adequate health infrastructure in districts, boosting COVID vaccine drive for adolescents in mission mode.The Prime Minister said “Need continuous research in testing, vaccines, pharmacological interventions, including genome sequencing, as coronavirus evolving.”Mr. Modi added “Continued ‘Jan Andolan’ focused on COVID-appropriate behaviour critical in our battle against pandemic.”The Prime Minister said that the meeting with Chief Ministers to be convened to discuss State-specific scenarios, best practices, public health response.Mr. Modi highlighted the need to ensure effective usage of masks, physical distancing as new normal to control COVID spread.The Prime Minister also called for ensuring continuity of non-COVID health services while managing COVID cases.Mr. Modi said “31% adolescents aged 15-18 years administered first dose of COVID vaccine within seven days.”According to Union Health Ministry data updated at 8 am on Sunday, a total of 1,59,632 new coronavirus infections were reported, the highest in 224 days, while the active cases increased to 5,90,611, the highest in around 197 days.On May 29 last year, India had logged 1,65,553 infections in a day.
