Omicron effect: India records sharp rise in COVID-19 cases; 58,097 new infections in last 24 hours

New Delhi: India has recorded a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases at 58,097 in the last 24 hours, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported on Wednesday. A total of 2,135 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected across the country so far.

The fatality count increased to 4,82,551 with 354 more people succumbing due to the deadly contagious disease.

India’s COVID active caseload currently stands at 2,14,004, the health ministry stated in its 8 am bulletin. Active cases account for less than 1 per cent of total cases, currently at 0.61 per cent.

As per the MoHFW, 15,389 coronavirus patients recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to 3,43,21,803.

Over 147.72 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far under the Nationwide Vaccination Drive, as per the latest data available.
