Polling on 54 seats today, 613 candidates in fray – All you need to know

Photo : PTILucknow: More than two crore voters will exercise their franchise on Monday to seal the fate of 613 candidates locking horns for 54 seats in the seventh and final phase of the ongoing Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.Nine districts of the Purvanchal region of the state goes to polls today. The districts are Azamgarh, Mau, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Bhadohi and Sonbhadra.The polling will commence at 7 am and will go on till 6 pm. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.In these 9 districts, the BJP had won 29 seats in the 2017 Assembly elections, and seven by its allies, while the Samajwadi Party bagged 11 seats and six were won by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Three seats were won by Congress and five by other smaller parties.Notably, BJP has exceptional influence in Varanasi, the home constituency of PM Modi, where it secured all the eight assembly constituencies in the district in the 2017 elections namely Pindra, Ajagara, Shivpur, Rohaniya, Varanasi North, Varanasi South, Varanasi Cantt, and Sevapur.Meanwhile, the Azamgarh district dominated by Yadavs and Muslims have traditionally been an SP stronghold and the party managed to bag 5 of 10 seats in 2017 here. Azamgarh was the biggest challenge for BJP in the 2017 election as it won only one seat.Voting will be held at 12,205 polling stations and 23,535 polling booths in 177 police station areas. As many as 78 Pink Booths (women booths) have also been arranged to motivate women to vote, and 12 women inspectors or sub-inspectors and 216 women constables or head constables have been deployed.As per the instructions of the Election Commission, all 12,205 polling stations will be covered by the CAPF. For the seventh phase, Uttar Pradesh has received 845 companies of CAPF.The constituencies that go to polls are Atraulia, Gopalpur, Sagadi, Mubarakpur, Azamgarh, Nizamabad, Phulpur-Powai, Deedarganj, Lalganj (SC), Mehnagar (SC), Madhuban, Ghosi, Muhammadabad-Gohna (SC), Mau, Badlapur, Shahganj, Ghazipur, Jangipur, Zahurabad, Mohammedabad, Zamania, Mughalsarai, Sakaldiha, Saidaraja, Chakia (SC), Pindra, Ajgara (SC), Shivpur, Rohaniya, Varanasi North, Varanasi South, Varanasi Cantonment, Sevapuri, Bhadohi, Gyanpur, Aurai (SC), Chanbe (SC), Mirzapur, Majhawan, Chunar, Madihan, Ghorawal, Robertsganj, Obra (ST) and Duddhi (ST).Related NewsUP election 2022 7th phase: All eyes on Varanasi; Mukhtar Ansari’s son in fray – constituencies and candidates
