Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday continued his scathing attack against the Congress, calling him a “modern day Jinnah” and reminding that “karma hits us back”. The remarks came less than a day after he criticised Rahul Gandhi for “demanding proof” of India’s surgical strike against Pakistan.

“Rahul Gandhi’s language is similar to that of Jinnah before 1947. In a way, Rahul Gandhi is modern-day Jinnah,” Sarma alleged.

Gandhi, he said had during a rally in poll-bound Uttarakhand on Friday, had no right to demand proof from the Army. “Look at the mentality of these people. General Bipin Rawat was the pride of the country. India conducted the Surgical Strike in Pakistan under his leadership. Rahul Gandhi demanded proof of the strike. Did we ever ask you for proof of whether you are Rajiv Gandhi’s son or not?” he had asked.

“Karma hits us back. We will never realise the pain of a soldier, who risks his life to conduct surgical strike on enemy land, when a Congress leader insults his patriotic act by demanding proof of it. Time for someone to introspect,” he tweeted on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Sarma had also responded to a tweet by the Wayanad MP, contending that India was far beyond a union and wondering that the Congress leader’s problem was with Nation, Nationality and Nationalism. “We are a proud Nation. Bharat cannot be held hostage to your tukde tukde philosophy,” he added.

Appeasement, the Chief Minister had said a day earlier, was in Congress’ DNA. “It has worked relentlessly to appease the Muslims for getting their votes. But instead of working for their advancement, the party wants the Muslims to remain backward and hence is promoting madrassas and hijab,” he alleged.

The recent remarks have not gone down well with the Congress, with the Assam unit of the party vehemently countering the remark involving Rajiv Gandhi. The National Students’ Union of India meanwhile has begun an indefinite strike against the Chief Minister’s “derogatory comment against Rahul Gandhi” and is presently blocking Lakhimpur town road. Members of the party’s student wing staged a demonstration outside its national office in New Delhi and its workers were seen rubbing black ink on the effigy of Sarma and raising slogans against him. They have demanded the CM’s resignation and an apology.

The party has also accused the Chief Minister of tarnishing the state’s image with his controversial statement. “The kind of filthy language that was uttered by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma shows the depravity of his mind. I hope his BJP bosses ask this motormouth to just shut up and concentrate on his job in Assam,” tweeted Congress state chief Bhupen Borah.
