Key Highlights

January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day every year in India to commemorate the Indian Constitution. Even though our country earned independence on August 15, 1947, it was on January 26, 1950, that we formally adopted a full-fledged constitution.
Every year on this day, a mega Republic Day parade is held at the Rajpath in New Delhi. The day commences with the prime minister paying tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. Following that, India’s flag is unfurled by the president in the presence of several important dignitaries. One of the highlights of the parade are tableaus that display the rich culture of the respective states.
Each year, the Ministry of Defence shortlists a few tableaux to showcase at the annual parade. This year, a total of 21 tableaux were displayed. Out of these, 12 were from various states and union territories, while the rest were from the central ministries and departments.
Punjab
Displaying Punjab’s contribution in the freedom struggle, the tableau of the state depicted Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. It also showcased protests against the Simon Commission led by Lala Lajpat Rai and Udham Singh shooting Michael O’Dwyer.
Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh’s tableau was based on the achievements through skill development & employment via ‘One District One Product’.
The development in the Kashi Vishwanath corridor was also exhibited.
Gujarat
The tableau of Gujarat was based on the theme of the ‘tribal movement of Gujarat’. The front part of the tableau represented the freedom fighting spirits of tribals’ ancestors.
Meghalaya
The tableau of Meghalaya displayed bamboo and cane handicrafts of the state.
Goa
Goa’s tableau was based on the theme ‘symbols of Goan Heritage’. It showcased Fort Aguada, Martyrs’ Memorial at Azad Maidan in Panaji and Dona Paula.
Uttarakhand
At the 73rd Republic Day parade, the Uttarakhand tableau depicted Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, Dobra-Chanti Bridge and Badrinath Temple.
Jammu and Kashmir
The tableau of Jammu & Kashmir depicted ‘Changing face of Jammu & Kashmir’ in the backdrop of the development scenario.
Karnataka
On Republic Day, Karnataka’s tableau was based on the theme ‘Credo of Traditional Handicrafts’.
Arunachal Pradesh
Based on the theme ‘Anglo Abor Adiverse’, Arunachal Pradesh’s tableau showcased the resistance of the tribal people of the state, particularly the Adis of Siang region, who had bravely fought against the imperial policy of expansion of the British rulers.
Haryana
Haryana’s tableau, based on the theme ‘Harayana Number One in Sports’, displayed proactive policies of the government to promote sports in the state.
