Shaurya Chakra 2022 awardees: A soldier who killed a terrorist in face-to-face gunfight, another who saved team members

New Delhi: Six personnel of the Indian Army have been decorated with Shaurya Chakra on the eve of Republic Day, including five posthumous.

List of soldiers who have been awarded the third highest peacetime gallantry award.

Sreejith M, Sena Medal

Sreejith was associated as a Naib Subedar with the 17th batallion of the Madras Regiment. He was martyred on July 8, 2021 while carrying out a search in densely forested and rugged terrain after observing a movement of two to three terrorists.

Anil Kumar Tomar

Havildar Anil Kumar Tomar was associated with the Rajput Regiment/44 Rashtriya Rifles. He laid down his life  after engaging with terrorists in Kashmir in December 2020. 

Havildar Anil Kumar Tomar was leading a Combat Action Team for the operation. While moving for the task, he came under heavy fire from the terrorists and sustained bullet injury in thigh. He was evacuated from the location but later succumbed to his injuries.

Kashiray Bammanalli

Kashiray Bammanalli was associated with the Corps of Engineers/44th batallion of the Rashtriya Rifles. He laid down his life in the line of duty while engaging with 4-5 terrorists in village in

Pulwama district on July 1, 2021.

Pinku Kumar

Pinku Kumar of the Jat Regiment/34th battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles was martyred on March 27, 2021 in Kashmir. During the gunfight, late Havildar Pinku stealthily closed on to the hiding terrorist and engaged him in close combat. In the exchange of fire, Havildar Pinku injured the second terrorist, however, sustained a grievous Gun Shot Wound on his head and later succumbed to his injuries.

Maruprolu Jaswanth Kumar Reddy

Late Sepoy Maruprolu Jaswanth Kumar Reddy of the 17th batallion of the Madras Regiment laid down his life on July 8, 2021 while carrying out a search operation in densely forested and rugged terrain after observing move of terrorists and immediately engaged them.

Rakesh Sharma

Rifleman Rakesh Sharma of the 5 Assam Rifles has been nominated for Shaura Chakra for displaying exceptional tactical acumen, selflessness, inspiring leadership and courage during an ambush in a village in Assam in May 2021.
