Sonia Gandhi chairs Congress working committee meeting, party set to discuss recent poll debacle

New Delhi: Days after the Congress suffered a massive defeat in five state Assembly elections, discussions are presently underway among the party’s working committee. The meeting, held amide widespread calls for change within the party, will be attended by top Congress leaders and chaired by Sonia Gandhi. Following the party’s failure to hold on to Punjab as well as massive losses in four other states, reports had claimed that the Gandhi family members would be resigning from all party positions. Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi had been star campaigners for the party and play a major role in key decisions of the party. The claims however were dismissed by party spokesman Randeep Surjewala, ruling out any major tectonic shift in the party.

Congress Working Committee meeting begins. The meeting is being chaired by party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi t.co/czj37hmjKX— ANI (@ANI) Mar 13, 2022 While several prominent leaders have spoken out in favour of the Gandhis, others including the dissident G-23 group have reportedly suggested Mukul Wasnik for the post of party president. An ANI report quoting an unnamed member of the G-23 said that this suggestion had not been accepted. “Though Sonia Gandhi is the (interim) president, it is virtually (being) run by KC Venugopal, Ajay Maken and Randeep Surjewala. There is no accountability fixed on them…Rahul Gandhi is not the president. But he operates from behind the scene and takes decisions. He does not communicate openly. We are party’s well-wishers and not enemies,” the source was quoted as saying. The G-23 leaders had suggested corrective measures after the previous round of assembly polls, when the Congress lost Puducherry and failed to make a mark in Kerala, Assam and West Bengal, but there had been little movement on that front. The latest poll results come as a rude shock as the party looks to to revive its prospects for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and fend off the emerging challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC).Crucial CWC Meet Update | Former Congress Top Neta’s Son Faisal Patel Plead Priyanka Gandhi
