The Mercedes-Benz S-Class received an update last year and is the Stuttgart-based carmaker’s quintessential flagship sedan. Compared to its predecessor, the new S-Class is a huge step up, as it’s now smarter, more feature-packed, and a lot safer as well. Add to it the fact that the S-Class is now locally assembled, making it slightly more affordable than before, priced at ₹ 1.57 crore for the S 350d 4Matic, and ₹ 1.62 crore for the S 450 4Matic. To put this into perspective, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class was earlier priced at ₹ 2.17 crore and ₹ 2.19 crore, respectively. We look at some of the highlights of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Design and Styling

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class comes with a signature three-pointed star hood ornament, along with the large chrome grille, an aggressive front bumper with black elements, and multi-beam LED headlamps. Mercedes-Benz also offers a set of new LED headlamp technology that it calls Digital Lights. You also get pop-out door handles and wraparound LED taillights. In terms of exterior colour options- the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class comes clothed in Designo Diamond White, Onyx Black, Anthracite Blue, Rubellite Red, and Emerald Green.

The new 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen unit offers most controls via touch or voice command. It also replaces 27 buttons over the older model

Interior

Inside, the cabin is one of the most luxurious spaces. It comes in Macchiato Beige or Sienna Brown Nappa leather upholstery. You also get Mercedes’ new 12.8-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system coupled with a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. Also on offer, is a 64-colour active ambient lighting, a Burmester 4D surround sound system, and massaging seats for the front passengers. The rear passenger’s bench-style seat can be electronically adjusted for various applications. There is also a provision for electronic massage as well as a fully sliding seat called the ‘Boss Mode’, which allows the rear passenger to catch a quick snooze.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the epitome of luxury in the true sense of the word. 

Dimension

The 2021 S-Class grows by 34 mm in length and 34 mm in width and sees a significant 51 mm growth in wheelbase over the previous model. It now measures 5,289 mm in length, 1,954 mm in width, 1,503 mm in height, and 3,216 mm in wheelbase.

The S-Class gets a bunch of active and passive safety systems along with driver-assist systems.

Engine

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class gets two engine options, 3.0-litre petrol, and a 3.0-litre diesel engine. The 350d is tuned to belt out 282 bhp @3,600 – 4,200 rpm and 600 Nm @1,200 – 3,200 rpm, while the 450 petrol puts out 362 bhp @5,500-6,100 rpm and 500 Nm @1,600-4,500 rpm. Both models get a 9-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The petrol motor gets an integrated starter generator and therefore, qualifies as a mild-hybrid powertrain.

(The S-Class is meant for relaxed cruising and can do so at triple-digit speeds all day long.
