Agra: All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Thursday, asked the Valmiki community to suggest a name to contest the election on a Congress ticket from Uttar Pradesh.

“When I came to Agra after the death of Arun Valmiki, I wondered what could we do for people belonging to the Valmiki community. You have seen atrocities against the people of the community again and again, whether it is in Hathras or in Agra,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said in Agra.

Arun Narwar, a sanitation worker from the Valmiki community allegedly died in police custody in Agra in October. He was accused of theft and had allegedly stolen Rs 25 lakh from the Maalkhana of Jagdishpura Police Station.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had visited the family of Arun Narwar after his death. “The choice of Congress party to have a Valmiki community candidate is aimed at sending a message to the state and to the country that the community which faced atrocities in Agra and Hathras fights on its own and fights strongly,” she said.

She further added that a delegation of Congress leaders had visited the representatives of the community to discuss the proposal of suggesting a candidate for contesting Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2022 on Congress ticket. Uttar Pradesh goes to the polls in 2022.
