Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Navjot Singh Sidhu asked Rahul Gandhi to announce Congress’ chief ministerial candidate for state Assembly elections 2022. Addressing a gathering in the poll-bound state, Channi claimed that there is no fight between him and his party colleague Sidhu. Notably, Sidhu also asked Rahul Gandhi to declare the chief ministerial candidate of Congress as the people of Punjab are demanding it.

Channi and Sidhu made the statements while sharing a stage with Rahul Gandhi.

“There is no fight between us. Announce chief minister face for Punjab elections 2022, we (Punjab Congress) will stand united,” Channi said with Sidhu standing beside him.

Addresing a gathering in Jalandhar, Rahul Gandhi announced that Congress will announce its CM’s face for the upcoming Punjab Assembly polls 2022 and the decision on it will be taken soon after consulting party workers.

The Gandhi scion, who kickstarted the election campaign of Congress with a visit to Golden Temple in Amristar, said Channi and state party president Sidhu have assured him that whoever is chosen as the CM face, the other will support him.

“Normally, we don’t do this but if the Congress party, our workers and Punjab want this, we will take a decision on the CM face,” he said.

Rahul said both Channi and Sidhu informed him that the electorate in Punjab wanted to know who will lead the Congress in the state.

“Media people call it the chief ministerial candidate. Both Sidhu and Channi gave me an assurance that two people cannot lead and only one can lead. Both told me whoever leads, the other will put all his energy behind him,” said Gandhi.

The statements come amid reports of severe infighting between Channi and Sidhu over the distribution of poll tickets and Congress’ CM candidate in the Punjab polls 2022.
